On Wednesday, June 19 (Juneteenth), from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Adult Faith Exploration Committee will host a discussion on the issue of caste as reflected in the book, Caste, by Isabel Wilkerson, and in the movie, Origin, directed by Eva DuVernay. It is not necessary to read the book, but please see the movie if you can. It can be found for rent at $5.99 on Prime, Vudu, YouTube, and other venues.

Betty Kirk will facilitate the discussion, which will focus on Wilkerson’s elements of a caste system and whether a caste system or its remnants still exist in the US and elsewhere. Bring your own lunch to the Gathering Area and join us in the discussion of the evolution of Wilkerson’s ideas and the way she researched the issues of slavery, genocide during WWII, and the caste system in India.

During the month of Juneteenth, Loving Day (Legalization of interracial marriage) and International Day of Countering Hate Speech, do economic inequality and hate crimes reflect caste with different names?
