On Looking: A Walker’s Guide to the Art of Observation by Alexandra Horowitz

Horowitz shows how much more there is to see—if only we would really look. this “elegant and entertaining” (The Boston Globe) explanation of how humans perceive their environments “does more than open our eyes…opens our hearts and minds, too, gently awakening us to a world—in fact, many worlds—we’ve been missing.” Leader: Bunny Guerin

Better Living Through Birding: Notes from a Black Man in the Natural World by Christian Cooper

Cooper tells the story of his extraordinary life leading up to the now-infamous incident in Central Park and shows how a life spent looking up at the birds prepared him, in the most uncanny of ways, to be a gay, Black man in America today. Equal parts memoir, travelogue, and primer on the art of birding, it recounts Cooper’s journey through the wonderful world of birds and what they can teach us about life, if only we would look and listen.
