Music Ministry is of great importance to us and is led by our professional Music Director, Marcie Schiff. Our music and our choir are an integral part of our Sunday Service as well at our special events. The choir is open to anyone who loves music and wants to be a member; there are no auditions, and recordings are available online to help members learn music. Contact our Music Director or simply join the rehearsals which are held on most Sunday from 8:30 am to 9:30 am at the Church.
A Message from Marcie
How wonderful it is for me to be part of the UUSD community. I’ve been trying to decide what is most important for you to know about me. I can tell you all of my qualification, such as I teach voice and music education methods at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, hold a Master of Music degree from Westminster Choir College of Princeton NJ and am in the dissertation phase of my Doctoral work at Boston University, and am an active adjudicator, clinician, and performer. I was an accompanist and vocal coach at First Unitarian in Wilmington for 15 years.
While very nice, it doesn’t tell you who ‘I am,” my philosophy of music in the community and within the service. Much of this you will discover over time. But to begin with, my hopes for music at UUSD grow from my deep belief that I am here to help you explore ways to make music more powerful within the service, the community, and hopefully within each of you. I am very interested in the use of the voice as an expressive instrument; freeing the body and the spirit, allowing them to vibrate in harmony.
Singing, be it in the choir or in the congregation, is at its essence an act of faith. It is a deep and personal mode of expression that exposes us to all within ear distance. In order to give life to those sounds we must trust that we will be greeted with kindness and acceptance. It is my job to help build that trust and that faith in order to deepen your experience within this community and maybe even touch how you walk through your days. For me, the great joy of this work is getting to walk that road together.
